Dolly Parton’s legacy includes a children’s hospital bearing her name

In her final months, Dolly Parton offered a remarkable gift to a children’s hospital in her native Tennessee.

The legendary entertainer and philanthropist provided a substantial donation to the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital in Knoxville. In recognition of her contribution, the facility was renamed Dolly Parton Children’s Hospital. The hospital announced the gift, and its new name, in February 2026.

Parton died Tuesday at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer. After her passing, the pediatric hospital paid tribute to the global icon.

“As our hospital's namesake and friend in advancing our mission to provide world-class healthcare to children and their families, we are profoundly honored to have been touched by Dolly's extraordinary compassion, bright light and generosity,” the hospital said on its website.

In a video announcing the gift in February, Parton said she sought to make a difference.

“Ever since I’ve been in a position to do my part and to help others, I have tried to do just that, especially when children and families need it most,” Parton said in the video.

“We're committed to strengthening a relationship where world-class care and a caring heart go hand in hand for children across East Tennessee and beyond, and I hope that you'll join me in supporting this work,” she said.

A generational commitment

Matt Schaefer, the president and CEO of Dolly Parton Children’s Hospital, told Chief Healthcare Executive® in a March 2026 interview that the star’s donation would expand the hospital’s services.

Schaefer said the hospital’s relationship with a figure known around the world would enable the organization to care for more kids, recruit more doctors, and enjoy more success in fundraising.

“I think anytime you have someone of her stature, someone of her standing, certainly in this region, across the United States, across the world, honestly, and to have the halo effect of everything she stood for in her life, including her love for children in particular, it just is fantastic for the future of our mission,” Schaefer said.

He politely declined to specify precisely how much Parton donated to the hospital, but he spoke enthusiastically about the impact her gift would have.

“What I can tell you is that she has made a generational and transformational commitment to Children's and its mission, and that commitment is something that goes beyond our wildest expectations, that is beyond generous, and will be a lifeline for this mission for now and for years to come. And we're excited about and humbled by her willingness to do so,” Schaefer said.

‘Incredibly disarming’

Schaefer met Dolly in preparation of the hospital’s announcement of her gift, and the facility’s new name. He recalls being nervous before the meeting, and how she put him at ease.

“Incredibly disarming personality, a keen sense of humor based on my limited interactions,” Schaefer recalled. “I don't know how to describe it, other than a truly humbling experience and beyond any expectation that I could have created for myself in advance.”

“It's a bit of a surreal moment, as you can imagine all the things that you would imagine about who she is, a human being, played out for me. And it was truly humbling, and to hear her, in her own words, talk about the importance of this to her, to her community, to this organization, and to children, was super affirming,” he said.

Schaefer also acknowledged an “appropriate set of expectations” with a hospital bearing Dolly Parton’s name.

“Dolly Parton, the human being, Dolly Parton, the name and the things that are associated with that, they're associated with excellence, they're associated with service. They're associated with compassion,” he said in the March interview.

“I think that we feel pressure to live up to those expectations,” Schaefer said. “I'm proud of the work that Children's has done over its almost-90-year-history to be well-positioned. To imagine Dolly Parton coming alongside us, I think that that speaks well as to our history about some of those key values.”

‘Legacy of generosity’

Parton’s legacy of giving was seen in other contributions in healthcare.

She gave $1 million to Vanderbilt University’s Medical Center for research that helped produce Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine, the Associated Press reported.

She has also contributed to the Covenant Health LeConte Medical Center in Tennessee, and that hospital is home to the Dolly Parton Center for Women’s Services. The medical center’s maternity ward is also named in honor of Dolly.

Jim VanderSteeg, president and CEO of Covenant Health, spoke about her enduring contributions Tuesday.

“Dolly Parton represented the very best of East Tennessee,” VanderSteeg said in a statement.

“We are honored that her name is associated with the Dolly Parton Center for Women’s Services and the Dolly Parton Birthing Center at Covenant Health LeConte, where her legacy of generosity and compassion continues through the care provided to women and families every day. Her generosity improved countless lives, and her example will continue to inspire future generations to serve, give back and make a difference.”
