Key Takeaways
- Trinity West, Trinity East, Trinity Twin City Medical Center, and Trinity St. Clairsville Neighborhood Hospital have officially transferred from CommonSpirit to UPMC as of Oct. 1.
- Expanding into eastern Ohio strengthens UPMC’s regional density adjacent to Pittsburgh, complementing its existing multistate network of 40+ hospitals and 800+ outpatient locations.
The health system has closed a transaction with CommonSpirit Health to acquire Trinity Health System in Ohio.
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has finalized a deal that brings four more hospitals into the system.
UPMC and CommonSpirit Health have completed the transfer of the Trinity Health System, based in Steubenville, Ohio. Trinity’s four hospitals officially become part of UPMC as of Oct. 1.
The two systems announced Wednesday that they completed the transaction.
Leslie Davis, president and CEO of UPMC, welcomed the completion of the deal and the opportunity to expand the system’s presence in Ohio.
“We are proud to officially welcome the Trinity team to UPMC. We look forward to a bright future focused on serving communities of the Ohio Valley with both innovation and compassion, advancing care close to home, and improving the health and well-being of every patient who turns to us,” Davis said in a statement.
With the addition of Trinity, UPMC extends its reach into nearby eastern Ohio, which is near the system’s home base in Pittsburgh. UPMC operates more than 40 hospitals and 800 other healthcare locations in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New York.
Dwayne Richardson, interim market president of Trinity Health System, said in a statement that the deal will ensure access to care. Richardson had previously praised UPMC’s commitment to caring for vulnerable communities.
“By integrating Trinity Health System into UPMC, we are building upon a foundation of trusted collaboration to ensure that high-quality, patient-centered care remains accessible and sustainable for years to come,” Richardson said in a statement. “We know that UPMC shares our dedication to clinical excellence.”
Richardson had previously praised UPMC’s service to vulnerable communities when the system was announced in the spring.
"Trinity Health System and UPMC share a commitment to providing top-tier care and serving the most vulnerable members of our community,” Richardson said in May. "UPMC's proven track record of community service and compassionate approach to care were key factors in our decision, and will significantly benefit our patients."
Trinity Health System operates Trinity West and Trinity East in Steubenville, Ohio; Trinity Twin City Medical Center in Dennison, Ohio; and Trinity St. Clairsville Neighborhood Hospital in St. Clairsville, Ohio. The system also operates a host of clinics.
In recent years, CommonSpirit Health has moved to divest some hospitals in states with more challenging markets as the Catholic health system looks to improve its financial performance.
Still, CommonSpirit remains one of America’s largest health systems, with 156 hospitals and about 2,400 care sites in 24 states.
UPMC has endured some challenging years financially but saw improved performance in 2025. In March 2026,
Fitch cited “a material improvement in operating performance in fiscal 2025, driven largely by stabilization in the insurance division and supported by ongoing cost-reduction and revenue-diversification initiatives that should continue to generate incrementally stronger cashflow.”
