Kaiser Permanente closes deal to enter Nevada

The health system has finalized a joint venture with Renown Health to operate a health plan and provide outpatient care services.

After several months of planning, Kaiser Permanente is now moving ahead with plans to enter Nevada.

Kaiser Permanente said this week that it has closed a deal with Renown Health in Nevada on a joint venture. They plan to operate a health plan and outpatient care system serving communities in northern Nevada. Kaiser Permanente and Renown Health now share joint ownership of Hometown Health, which had previously been owned by Renown Health.

Kaiser Permanente and Renown Health first announced plans in September 2025 and announced this week that they have finalized the transaction. In addition to closing the deal, Kaiser Permanente also announced a leadership team for the Nevada market.

Greg A. Adams, chairman and chief executive officer of Kaiser Permanente, said the partnership will offer more communities in northern Nevada access to better health care.

“This joint venture with Renown Health allows us to extend our value-based care model and nation-leading health outcomes to northern Nevada, in collaboration with Renown Health’s trusted local teams,” Adams said in a statement. “Together, we will improve health outcomes; expand access to affordable, high-quality care; and serve the needs of this growing community.”

Kaiser Permanente plans to introduce more outpatient services in the Reno area in the coming months. The health system plans to open two new medical offices this year, and they’ll offer primary and specialty care, along with a laboratory and radiology. Kaiser Permanente will also operate existing Del Monte Lane medical offices.

Kaiser Permanente and Renown say they are developing new health plan options, and they plan to have more information available for consumers before open enrollment begins in the fall of 2026. They expect to offer health plans in 2027.

In 2027, Kaiser Permanente says its retail pharmacies will be available for patients in Reno, while patients will also have access to Renown Pharmacy. In 2027, Kaiser Permanente says its digital health platform will be available to members.

Renown Health, a nonprofit health system, operates two hospitals and other healthcare clinics.

Brian Erling, MD, president and CEO of Renown Health, said the partnership with Kaiser Permanente will offer more choices for patients and employers.

“Renown Health’s deep roots in northern Nevada, combined with Kaiser Permanente’s national leadership in care and coverage, will help us deliver on our shared mission to make high-quality care more accessible and affordable for all,” Erling said in a statement.

Kaiser Permanente also announced a slate of leaders for the Nevada market.

Trish Rodriguez has been named Kaiser Permanente’s regional president in Nevada. Most recently, she served as Kaiser’s senior vice president, continuum operations and clinical services in northern California.

Kaiser Permanente also named other top leaders in Nevada, including Mark Roberts, MD, executive medical director for the region, and Bethany Sexton, health plan leader in northern Nevada.

With Nevada growing at a robust pace, it’s easy to see why the state is appealing to Kaiser Permanente. Nevada’s population grew by 1.7% from 2023 to 2024, the second fastest growth in the west, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Over the past couple of years, Kaiser Permanente has expanded into other new markets. In December 2024, Kaiser Permanente’s Risant Health completed the acquisition of Cone Health, based in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Risant Health finalized a deal to acquire Geisinger Health, the Pennsylvania system, in March 2024.

Kaiser Permanente is still dealing with a nurses’ strike. More than 30,000 nurses are striking at Kaiser Permanente’s facilities in California and Hawaii.
