Oregon hospital system names new CEO | MED MOVES

Dignity Health appoints a new leader for two hospitals, and other leaders tackle new opportunities.

Michael Hartke will serve as the next president and CEO of the St. Charles Health System, which operates four hospitals in central Oregon.

Hartke will take over as CEO in July. He succeeds Dr. Steve Gordon, who plans to retire. Gordon plans to stay on for a few months to assist with the transition.

Hartke is the executive vice president and chief operating officer of St. Charles. He joined the organization a year ago but he has more than 25 years of healthcare leadership experience. He previously served as president of Northwest Community Healthcare, a division of Endeavor Health, in Arlington Heights, Ill.

“I am honored the Board is confident in my leadership abilities to step into Steve’s shoes, which will be very hard to fill,” Hartke said in a statement.

“I feel exceptionally grateful to have benefited from Steve’s leadership and friendship throughout my time here at St. Charles,” he said. “There is no doubt that the health care industry faces significant challenges, but I’m confident we will continue working together as an organization and a community to meet them head on.”

Gordon has led St. Charles for four years. Ann Rhoads, board chair of St. Charles Health System, praised Gordon’s work in stabilizing the system after the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These four years as St. Charles President and CEO have been the highlight of my career. Hands down,” Gordon said in a statement. “I’m so proud of our essential and growing impact on Central Oregon and how we’ve stabilized and strengthened ourselves as an organization.”

Dignity Health names president of 2 hospitals

Christine McSweeney has taken over as president of two Dignity Health hospitals in California.

In April, she took over as president of Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City and Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz.

“I am honored and excited to join Dignity Health’s California Region and lead these two distinguished hospitals,” McSweeney said in a news release. “I am deeply committed to continuing the excellent work already underway at both facilities and working collaboratively with our dedicated caregivers, staff, and the communities we serve. I look forward to building on the strong foundations here and contributing to the health and well-being of the Central Coast.”

McSweeney joined Dignity Health’s California Region after working in CommonSpirit Health’s Utah Market, where she served as president of Holy Cross Hospital - Jordan Valley and West Valley.

BJ Predum, president of Dignity Health’s Central Coast Market, said the region is “incredibly fortunate” to have McSweeney in the role.

"Christine’s exceptional leadership, commitment to quality, and ability to foster strong teams make her the ideal person to guide Sequoia and Dominican Hospitals forward, ensuring continued excellence and delivering the highest benefit to our patients and communities,” Predum said in a news release.

“I’ve dedicated more than 25 years of my career to Shriners Children’s, and I believe deeply in its mission,” Kozin said in a news release. “This is a healthcare system unlike any other, where physicians are empowered to focus on what matters most: delivering the best care, advancing research, and educating the next generation. My goal is to build on that foundation and continue expanding our impact for children around the world.”
