Hospital Sisters Health System, Dignity Health, and the University of Maryland Medical System appoint leaders to new roles.

Brian Brennan has been named president and CEO of Hospital Sisters Health System’s Central Illinois Market.

Brian Brennan

Brennan will oversee the five HSHS hospitals in that market. He will also serve as the president and CEO of HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. He will join HSHS on May 27.

Brennan brings over 20 years of executive experience leading regional healthcare systems, including rural hospitals and clinics.

He joins HSHS from Baylor Scott and White Healthcare in Texas, where he serves as chief operating officer of the Greater Austin Region. He previously served as system vice president and COO of the UT Health East Texas Medical Center in Tyler.

“I am excited to be returning to the Midwest and serving with a health system with such a rich history of service and caring, and offering my support in delivering high-quality, compassionate care to the patients served by HSHS,” Brennan said in a statement. “I am also looking forward to becoming an active member of the Springfield community by getting involved with many of the local organizations.”

In addition to HSHS St. John’s Hospital, the system’s central Illinois market includes HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital, Decatur; HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham; HSHS St. Francis Hospital, Litchfield; and HSHS Good Shepherd Hospital, Shelbyville.

Noel Sousa

University of Maryland Medical System appoints CFO

Noel Sousa has been named the chief financial officer of the University of Maryland Medical System.

Sousa takes the post beginning July 7.

He comes to Maryland from UC Davis Health in Sacramento, California, where he has held a host of leadership roles since 1997. Most recently, he served as interim CFO, where he managed a $7 billion capital plan.

“UMMS has a distinguished reputation for delivering exceptional health care and fostering innovation,” Sousa said in a statement. “I look forward to working with the talented team at UMMS to further strengthen our financial operations and support the organization's mission of providing high-quality care to Maryland communities.”

Mohan Suntha, MD, president and chief executive officer of the University of Maryland Medical System, praised Sousa’s experience.

"Noel's enthusiasm for health care and his proven track record in financial leadership make him an excellent fit for our team,” Suntha said in a statement. “We are confident that his expertise and vision will further strengthen our financial operations and support our mission of providing exceptional health care to our communities."

Robert Miller

Dignity Health hires new marketing leader for California

Robert Miller has been named Dignity Health’s regional vice president of marketing and communications for California.

Miller brings more than 25 years of healthcare marketing experience to Dignity Health, which is part of CommonSpirit Health. Most recently, he served as chief marketing officer at Gateway Foundation.

He has held leadership positions at Abbott and Baxter Healthcare, and he also served as president of BPD Healthcare.

"I’m honored to join Dignity Health and contribute to its mission of delivering compassionate, high-quality care to communities across California," Miller said in a statement. "I look forward to collaborating with teams across the region to elevate our brand, strengthen connections with the people we serve, and support the incredible work being done throughout the organization."

Adam Rice, system senior vice president and chief marketing officer of CommonSpirit Health, said Miller possesses “a blend of strategic insight, healthcare expertise, and a deep understanding of how to connect with consumers in meaningful ways.”

Elwood Bernard “Bernie” Boone III

Sentara Health names hospital president

Elwood Bernard “Bernie” Boone III has been named president of Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital.

Boone has been part of Sentara Health for years. He has been serving as president of Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital since 2012.

Boone will take over as president of Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital starting June 2.

“My family’s connection to this region makes this opportunity especially meaningful,” Boone said in a statement.

“Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital has a long-standing reputation for clinical excellence and a deep, trusted bond with the community,” he said. “I’m honored to join this remarkable team and help write the next chapter in its legacy, further strengthening our culture of patient-centered care, expanding access to services, and working alongside staff, physicians, and community partners to support the health needs of the region.”

Boone possesses more than 20 years of healthcare leadership experience.

Jeff Joyner, senior vice president and president of the acute care northwestern market for Sentara, called Boone a “thoughtful and experienced leader with a deep commitment to patient-centered care and community health.”

Joseph F. Sereno

HCA Midwest Health hospital appoints CFO

Joseph F. Sereno, has been appointed chief financial officer of Menorah Medical Center, part of HCA Midwest Health.

Sereno brings more than 20 years of experience in healthcare finance. Most recently, he served as vice president of finance and CFO at Santa Rosa Medical Center in San Antonio.

“I’m honored to step into the role of CFO at Menorah Medical Center and excited to join a dedicated team known for its commitment to excellence in patient care and strong financial leadership,” Sereno said in a statement. “Supporting community-based healthcare has long been my professional and personal passion. I look forward to contributing to Menorah’s continued success and mission to serve patients with compassion and integrity.”

Sean Kamber, CEO of Menorah Medical Center, said that he’s pleased to welcome Sereno.

“His strong track record in strategic planning, operational leadership, and business growth, combined with his results-driven mindset and collaborative approach, will be instrumental in supporting our mission to advance innovation and provide exceptional, high-quality and compassionate care to the communities we serve,” Kamber said in a statement.
