Chad Paulson, chair of the university’s board of directors, said that Elnahal has been named OHSU’s president-select. The OHSU board is slated to vote to confirm Elnahal as president during a meeting on June 27.

Elnahal formerly served as CEO of the Veterans Health Administration, which serves more than 9 million veterans and operates 170 medical centers.

He also brings experience in an academic medical center. Elnahal served as the president and CEO of University Hospital in Newark, the main academic medical center for Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.

Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek said in a statement, “President-elect Dr. Shereef Elnahal has the experience and accomplishments to usher OHSU into the future and continue leading in health care, education and research.”

A 25-member committee, which included doctors, nurses and scientists, led the search.

Elnahal recently co-authored a study that examined burnout at the Veterans Health Administration, which found improvement but that burnout levels remain higher than during pre-pandemic years.

In a post on LinkedIn about the study, Elnahal hailed the progress but also noted the “lingering sense that we just need to do more to support our workforce across different fields.”
