The website released its annual list of the top hospitals. Winners came from large healthcare giants and smaller systems.

Healthgrades has unveiled its list of the top hospitals in the country.

Today, Healthgrades announced the recipients of the 2026 America’s Best Hospitals Awards. As is customary each year, Healthgrades named the top 50, the top 100 and the top 250 hospitals in the country.

Healthgrades, a website where people can look and compare doctors and hospitals, examined about 4,500 hospitals and evaluated their performance across more than 30 procedures and conditions. Those making the top 250 rank among the top 5% of hospitals, while the top 50 hail the top 1%, Healthgrades says.

This year’s winners include hospitals from some of America’s largest health systems, but some of the top 50 hospitals come from smaller systems as well.

Dr. Alana Biggers, medical advisor at Healthgrades, said the hospitals that earned honors are meeting high standards of patient care.

“The hospitals that are getting recognized really should be celebrated and congratulated for this accomplishment,” Biggers tells Chief Healthcare Executive®.

Biggers says it’s important for hospitals to maintain consistency and building an environment that supports patients and enables clinicians to do their best work.

“I think it comes down to really just building that infrastructure and having the leadership in place that encourages and supports different health systems to make sure that they're performing at their best level,” she says.

Healthgrades estimates that 211,370 lives would be saved if all hospitals performed similarly to the top 250 hospitals in its rankings. The website analyzed Medicare data from 2022 through 2024.

While celebrating the top-notch hospitals, Healthgrades also points out that many Americans don’t have easy access to those facilities. Almost half of all Americans (46%) live more than 25 miles from the top 250 hospitals, and 14 states don’t have a facility ranked among the top 250.

When it comes to access, Biggers says, “It's still an issue … I don't want to sugarcoat that at all.”

For those not in close proximity to the top hospitals recognized by Healthgrades should look to find the best facilities available.

“I would still encourage people to ask, to shop around,” she says.

Other recent reports also suggest hospitals are improving in patient safety. Hospital surgery patients in 2024 were more likely to survive, and less likely to have complications, than patients in 2019, according to a report released by the American Hospital Association and Vizient.
