Healthgrades has announced the 2024 lists of hospitals honored for both patient safety and the patient experience. A group of 79 hospitals received both awards.

A select group of 79 hospitals claimed both honors in the Healthgrades analysis. Healthgrades announced the honorees Tuesday morning.

In the patient safety category, hospitals are recognized for their efforts in preventing harmful events to patients during their hospital stay. The patient experience category honors hospitals who stand out when it comes to communicating with their patients.

Brad Bowman, MD, chief medical officer and head of data science at Healthgrades, said in a statement that the honors are designed to help give patients more insights when they are choosing a hospital.

“As consumers take a more hands-on approach to their healthcare journeys, hospital quality should be a top consideration when choosing where to receive care,” Bowman said in a statement.

In the patient safety category, Healthgrades honors 444 hospitals (the top 10% of evaluated hospitals) in preventing serious injuries during hospital stays. The organization said hospitals nationwide could have avoided 97,000 injuries over a three-span if they all performed at the levels of the top hospitals in patient safety.

From 2020 to 2022, the period Healthgrades examined, four incidents accounted for nearly three quarters of all patient injuries in hospitals: in-hospital falls leading to a fracture; a collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery; pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital, and catheter-related bloodstream infections.

For the patient experience award, Healthgrades selected 388 recipients; they ranked among the top 15% of eligible hospitals. Healthgrades chose three areas to analyze if patients would recommend a hospital to others: doctor communication, nurse communication and good communication regarding care instructions when being discharged from the hospital.

Even among the winners, Healthgrades found 79 hospitals who received both patient safety and patient excellence awards. The 79 dual recipients come from 27 states.

Some health systems had hospitals winning in both categories. Healthgrades said Baylor, Scott & White, Houston Methodist, Mayo Health, Penn Medicine, and Surgery Partners had the most “dual recipients.”
