Doug L. Wood Explains Why Fee-for-Service Isn't Going Anywhere

Video

"We continue to spend hundreds of billions of dollars trying to produce these measures, which for some people are irrelevant."

At the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation’s Transform 2017 conference, Doug L. Wood sat down with Healthcare Analytics News™ to discuss the Center’s history and projects alongside other important topics, like the movement to value-based care.

In this section of our interview, Wood details how bundled payments can work for some medical conditions, but not others. He also speaks about the difficulty of defining the achievement of “health” for a condition like diabetes.

“We continue to spend hundreds of billions of dollars trying to produce these measures, which for some people are irrelevant,” he said. “Not only are we wasting all of those resources, but we’re really making the delivery system focus on things that are not as important.
